After dealing with very light winds out of the northwest in the first race of the day, principal race officer Nancy Schultz and the Westhampton Yacht Squadron Race Committee quickly switched the course around to accommodate the new wind direction and wind speed for the following two races on Saturday. The typical sea breeze that kicks in after noon from the southwest was very welcomed by the baker’s dozen of Flying Scots competing for the Sis Rice Minsch Memorial Trophy on Moriches Bay, hosted by the Westhampton Yacht Squadron.
Skipper Mike DiSario and crew Matt Roden took that first race of the day, but Luke Hickling, Nick Purpura and Sue Jenkins won the second and third races. DiSario and Hickling’s crews were tied with six points apiece, but with Hickling claiming the final two races of the day, his two “bullets” of the day, he and his crew were declared the winner of the Sis Rice Minsch Trophy.
The trophy is awarded to the Flying Scot team with the best scores of the day and was given to Westhampton Yacht Squadron in 2001 in memory of Sis Rice by her family. Sis Rice won the Women’s Morgan Bowl nine times and represented the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association at the U.S. Sailing Area “B” semifinals and also on the national level.
Saturday marked the third Westhampton Yacht Squadron Flying Scot Summer Series Race Day out of five planned days throughout the summer. Each race day contains three races. Hickling and team are currently in first place in the WYS Flying Scot Summer Series standings, followed by Alex Wilcenski and team in second place and Jack Schultz and team in third place.
The next WYS Flying Scot Summer Series race day is this Saturday, July 30, followed by the Instructors Championship the following day.
