Hit Pause

I’m writing to express my concern about the proposed 125-foot cell tower at 25 Windmill Lane, a structure that would tower over our historic district and sit near homes, including those on Coopers Farm Road [“Southampton Village Looks To Add Cell Tower; Historic District Could Be Expanded,” 27east.com, November 15].

Residents have raised valid concerns about long-term exposure to wireless radiation, especially as research on 5G technology continues to evolve. While the science is still developing, it’s not unreasonable for neighbors to question the wisdom of placing a commercial-grade tower so close to where people live, work and walk every day.

Equally troubling is the lack of public notice and meaningful input before the village entered into what appears to be a 20-year lease with the tower company. Technology is changing rapidly; do we really want to lock ourselves into a two-decade commitment before fully understanding the alternatives?

The applicant is seeking a special exception use, yet is also requesting multiple zoning variances just to make the project fit. If a property needs that much relief, it’s probably the wrong location.

I urge our village administration to hit pause. I urge the Planning Board — as lead agency under SEQRA — to issue a positive declaration and fully evaluate the environmental, visual, and community character impacts. Once approved, this facility cannot be unbuilt. It will define a part of our downtown for a generation.

Let’s take the time to get it right.
