After it was put off for a week because of poor weather, the Hampton Lifeguard Association finally hosted its third annual Run-Swim-Run competition on Friday at Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett.
The event, coordinated by HLA member Bella Tarbet, is held to help raise funds to send HLA guards — from East Hampton and Southampton towns — to the United States Lifesaving Association’s National Lifeguard Championships, which is held August 6-9 in South Padre Island, Texas.
There were two separate races, a “full race,” which was a half-mile run, quarter-mile swim and quarter-mile run, and then a “mini race,” which was a quarter-mile run, eighth-of-a-mile swim and eighth-of-a-mile run. And there were two categories in the full race, relay and individual. For the relay, one person ran the first leg, another swam and a third ran the last leg.
This year’s winner of the mini race was Evelyn Rizzo, with Lily Brown and Owen Litman following, respectively. Vanessa Rizzo, fresh off her victory in the Hamptons Youth Tri nearly a week ago, and the oldest sister of Evelyn, won the full race. Thomas McGlade placed second and Heidi Rizzo, the middle Rizzo sister, finished third. Luke Tarbet and Anthony Petersohn won the relay portion.
