I recently drove by the vacated building that used to be Schmidt’s for the umpteenth time in the last few months. I miss that place, as I miss the now eerily empty parking lot that was always jammed with trucks even before sunrise, as workers from all over the island converged to pick up an egg sandwich and a cup of coffee before heading off to their jobs.

So, as I share these few words of fond memories and reflection, I do want to take this opportunity to remind my friend Dennis Schmidt that I’m still waiting for one of those bumper stickers he said he was printing and handing out.

The one that says: “Honk If You Miss Schmidt’s.”
