Hope Lester of Tuckahoe died of natural causes at the Hampton Center for Rehabilitation on April 23. She was 97.
She is survived by her husband of over 70 years, Robert “Bob” Lester.
Born on April 12, 1923 to Waldo and Mary Penny of Hampton Bays, Ms. Lester spent her first 11 years at the Shinnecock Lighthouse, where her father was a keeper until the light was decommissioned in 1934.
On her father’s side, she was a direct descendant of Southampton’s earliest settlers and was an avid horsewoman in her youth.
For decades Ms. Lester was a trusted caretaker for numerous homes in Southampton’s estate section.
Ms. Lester met her future husband, a commercial fisherman, on the ocean beach shortly after his return from the Pacific Theatre.
After marriage, they found a house in Tuckahoe and went on to raise four children there.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Sue Penny Lester of Hampton Bays, Kim Robert Lester and MaryAnn Mosley of Southampton, David Waldo Lester of Clatskanie, Oregon; her daughters-in-law Grace Kim Lester and Julia Huecker Lester; her eight grandchildren, Richard, Robert and John Casabianca, Joy Mosley Figueroa, Michael, Christopher, Adam and Jackson Lester; as well as eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
She was predeceased by her sister, Shirley W. Penny, in 2014, and by a son in law, William Scott Mosely.
The family is planning a private interment service at Good Ground Cemetery when conditions permit.
