At the editorial board’s request [“Sounding the Alarm,” Editorial, August 21], I read “A Constitutional Crisis Requires Action” [Viewpoint, Opinion, August 21]. I actually read it twice so that I could fully “hear” it, and what I heard was what has become the typical reaction to President Donald Trump’s victory in 2024. The central theme is that democracy is under threat because he simply was elected to do exactly what he’s presently doing. No earth-shattering epiphany — just the same nonsense that our democracy is perilously close to ruin.
So, instead of addressing women’s issues, Judi Roth has decided to join in denouncing the current administration and claim that our system is threatened by the very freedoms that Trump was elected under.
Here’s what most American women are concerned with, Ms. Roth. They want men removed from their locker rooms and to not compete in women’s sports. They want safe schools and school choice for their children and to be able to afford a home and have a family. Streets that are crime-free, with the opportunity to achieve the American dream. Lasting world peace and environmental sanity that doesn’t make us poorer. Additionally, a policy that allows immigration that doesn’t include millions crossing our border and overwhelming our cities to feed and house them.
If the League of Women Voters keep addressing non-issues that don’t make women’s lives better, this organization, like the Democratic Party, will continue a spiral of decline.
We already are seeing the Democratic Party moving further left, and now that a communist has won the nomination for the New York City mayoral race, we are seeing a further decay of American values that I can assure you does not sit well with women locally and nationally. The house on fire is not the Republican Party nor the Trump administration. The Democratic Party has destroyed all semblance of a party that has any vision for what most Americans want. “Unite & Rise” is basically taken right from the communist manifesto and will not sell to sane Americans.
So stop bashing the current administration with catchy phrases and come up with a plan to make women’s lives better. Banging drums and singing songs aren’t what Americans want. Our voices and our votes were heard in the last election, and we are all better off for it.
