Howard Kolbenheyer Sr., formerly of Hampton Bays, Dies June 15

Howard Kolbenheyer Sr. of Vero Beach, Florida, formerly of Hampton Bays, died on June 15, surrounded by his family, at Isles of Vero Beach. He was 94.

Born in New York City, he grew up in the Bronx. He married Veronica Dillon in 1943, settling in Levittown. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and survived D-Day on Normandy Beach. He fought his way across Europe and helped liberate Paris. He was wounded in Germany and awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was part of the “Greatest Generation” that saved the world from Nazism.

He was happily married for 72 years and enjoyed golfing, sports and spending time with his loving family, survivors said.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Howard Jr. of Florida, James of Mattituck, Kevin of Southampton and Jane of Southampton. He is also survived by daughters-in-law, Lynda and Cynthia; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
