Ignoring The Law

When will Governor Andrew Cuomo take control of the Department of Environmental Conservation?

The DEC is ignoring the May 27 Appellate Court ruling that annulled the permit for the Sand Land mine to operate. This ruling means no permit, no mining. To this day, the mine is still mining sand, ignoring the rule of law.

Contamination in our aquifer beneath the mine was made known by the Suffolk County Health Department and is our reason for concern. The DEC sends inspectors to observe the mine but does nothing to follow the law.

Our town and state elected officials have contacted Gov. Cuomo, the district attorney and DEC, to no avail. Code Enforcement issues tickets every day the mine operates. But nothing stops the mining operations.

How can the governor ignore this situation and allow the agency that is supposed to oversee our environmental concerns to protect our sole-source aquifer ignore the law?

It is time for the our community residents to demand that Gov. Cuomo get the DEC to follow the law. Please contact the governor at 518-474-1513, or www.governor.ny.gov, or send a letter to: The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of New York State, NYS State Capitol Building, Albany, NY 12224.

Demands by the masses may get his attention.
