June 16 is an extremely important election for Southampton Village. What’s at stake is whether or not the village moves to a 5-0 super-majority, with our politicians all backed by the same small group of people.
Mayor Jesse Warren’s track record of achievements is extremely impressive. He also has conducted himself with the highest level of professionalism and poise during trustee meetings, and the village has never looked better. It is the shame that incumbent trustees, including the mayor’s opponent, have spent the last year undermining his great work and preventing him from accomplishing more goals on behalf of the community.
We are incredibly lucky to have a mayor with such determination, persistence and patience as he continues to serve the community in a positive way.
Also on the ballot in this election is lifetime benefits for current and future part-time trustees. Trustee candidates Greg Centeno and Palmer Hudson stated in the debate [“Watch: Southampton Village 2023 Trustee and Mayoral Debates,” 27east.com, June 1] that, if elected, they would end this practice at their first meeting in July 2023. Every resident should vote for Greg and Palmer just on this factor alone.
That said, I found both to be particularly impressive in the debate. Palmer Hudson really shined above the rest with his articulate nature and advanced technology background. The village could use him as a trustee, so he could use his background to help enhance cybersecurity efforts. Greg’s background in planning communities also would benefit the village.
The third item on the ballot is trust and judgment. We know that the mayor has shown strong leadership skills in the face of adversity. This was on full display during the 2020 pandemic. Mayor Warren also has pushed for more transparency and inclusivity in local government. Progress over politics.
This election, I sincerely hope that village residents vote for our outstanding mayor, who has done so much good. I also hope that they vote for Greg and Palmer so that we (1) avoid a 5-0 super-majority, (2) end benefits for life for part time trustees, and (3) have a forward-thinking and trustworthy mayor.
