Lilacs were once used for hedging and here you can see a hedge that may be a half century old, or older. Note the different colors. However, the plants need annual care and thinning. When the plants are allowed to become crowded, air circulation is limited and mildew can become a summer problem on the foliage. ANDREW MESSINGER
