Isabelle Katherine Dougherty of East Moriches, and formerly of Westhampton Beach and New York City died at her home on Wednesday, May 21, following a three-year illness. She was 87 and under the care of East End Hospice.
Mrs. Dougherty was born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, on February 13, 1921, to Edward John Matthews and Catherine Genevieve (Flood) Matthews. Her parents were both proprietors and postmasters at the Stockton Store, where she worked until the store’s closing in 1954.
She attended St. Gabriel’s High School and Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, and pursued a 30-year accounting career at Agency Managers in New York City.
Following her retirement in 1986, she resided in the Hamptons and continued her business career until 1997 as office manager of her son’s businesses, the nightclub Marakesh and Ned Dougherty Real Estate, Inc. in Westhampton Beach, where she was known to employees and friends as “Izzy” and “The Money Lady.” Her grandnephew Jacob Haitmanek and grandson Michael Dougherty often referred to her as “Disco Grandma.”
She is survived by a daughter, Kay M. Dougherty of East Moriches; a son, Edward J. “Ned” Dougherty; a sister, Rose Eugenia Brennan of Coxsackie; a grandson, Michael Christopher Dougherty of East Quogue; and many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward X. “Ned” Dougherty in 1974, and Michael Kovalick in 1987.
A mass and memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31, at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island in Eastport at 11:30 a.m., followed by a picnic and gathering of family and friends at the shrine’s pavilion.
A private cremation was held under the direction of the Wesche Funeral Home in Center Moriches.
