It Starts Here

The editorial “The Jam We’re In” [August 7] told the truth: There are simply too many vehicles on the road.

Let’s start by regulating the number of vehicles traveling on Routes 27 and 27A between the Shinnecock Canal and the monument in Bridgehampton between the hours of 7 and 9 a.m. and 4 and 6 p.m.

Only vehicles with commercial plates or a sticker verifying they are a homeowner or a renter of at least one month duration will be permitted. The exceptions will be vehicles with at least four occupants.

In order to rideshare, there needs to be safe, legal parking available. Perhaps renting land from the Shinnecock Nation in addition to using land already owned by Southampton Town west of the canal would serve that purpose.

Negotiations need to begin with the Long Island Rail Road to add commuter trains during those restricted vehicle travel times. Businesses need to arrange rideshares for their employees.

Restrictions on the numbers or types of vehicles allowed into resort communities is not unique to the Hamptons. It is time for real solutions to be imposed, and Southampton Town must lead the way, because that is where the bottleneck starts.
