My entire adult life, I have identified politically as an independent. I voted for a candidate, not a party. That all changed 10 years ago, when Donald Trump initiated an aggressive takeover of the Republican Party and it became MAGA.
Last Sunday night, I went to a fundraiser for Suffolk County Democrats. A dozen of them, both prospective candidates and current politicians, spoke of their work and their wishes. There was no raging against immigrants, there was no screaming about how America is going down the tubes, there was no hatred.
Each one spoke about their accomplishments, personal or political, and their hope for the future. It had to do with clean water, clean air, providing help for expectant mothers, relief for families in need. They spoke about what they could personally bring to their role as a public servant. Essentially, they spoke about their values.
I hope, one day, the Republican Party becomes better than MAGA. For right now, my value system is best expressed by the Democratic Party, as imperfect as it may be.
Sunday night made me realize that, for me, voting has, and will always be, about values.
