James R. Cherry Jr.
James R. Cherry Jr. of Bridgehampton died at Southampton Hospital on Saturday, July 30. He was 44.
Born on May 16, 1967, to James and Pearl Cherry, “Jamie” as he was known, graduated from Bridgehampton High School. He also attended the Board of Cooperative Educational Services where he studied auto mechanics. He worked at Home Sweet Home Moving and Storage Company in Wainscott.
According to family, Mr. Cherry lived for his mother’s sweet potato pudding and his Aunt Sandra’s macaroni salad, as well as taking his nieces and nephews trick-or-treating. He had a smile that would steal your heart and his favorite words were, “I love you!”
He had several nicknames, such as, Wild Wild West, Cherry, Brother-in-law, and only his sister was allowed to call him Bamie. He also gave himself the nickname, Mr. Wonderful. He loved his family, and his son “Jay” of Shirley was his pride and joy, survivors said.
In addition to his parents and his son, he is survived by his siblings, Lynne Cherry of Georgia, Pearl Morris and her husband Kelvin of Georgia, Lisa Myrick and her husband Ronald of Shirley, Yolanda Cherry Nelson Brown and her husband Oneil, Mattie Cherry, Sahlise Hopson and her husband Jason, all of Bridgehampton, and Erin Cherry of East Hampton; his grandfather, Joe Roberts of Florida; his companion Samone Johnson of East Hampton; his best friends, Uncle Hubert Earl Jeffers of North Carolina; his cousin, Donald Cherry of Bridgehampton, and Michael Feaster of East Hampton; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 6, at the First Baptist Church of Southampton; Reverend Henry Faison Jr. officiated. Interment followed at Edgewood Cemetery in Bridgehampton. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
