James David Brophy of Greenport, formerly of Southampton, died on March 25, 2017, at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. He was 90.
Born on October 5, 1926, in Mt. Vernon, he was the son of James David Brophy and Mildred Stall Brophy. He attended Iona Prep School, Amherst College and earned a Ph.D. at Columbia University.
Dr. Brophy served in the U.S. Naval Service from 1945 to 1946 as a electronic technician’s mate, 2nd class. On March 26, 1951, in Paris, he married Elizabeth Bergen, who predeceased him in 2011.
He was a professor of English literature at Iona College for 40 years, and a Fulbright Scholar from 1950-1951.
Dr. Brophy is survived by his daughters, Sheila Peiffer and husband Steven of Connecticut, Katharine Brophy of Harrison, and Elizabeth Brophy of Philadelphia; a son, James Brophy and wife Susan McKenna of Delaware; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, David B. Brophy, in 2011. A funeral service was held March 30 at St. Agnes Church in Greenport. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
