James E. Malone of Southampton died December 2, 2017. He was 83. A lifelong resident of Southampton, he was born February 3, 1934, to Elizabeth (Gormley) and Francis Malone and raised on the family farm on North Sea-Mecox Road. He attended Southampton Schools where he excelled in sports.
Mr. Malone married Constance Zeh on July 14, 1956, and they made a home in Southampton. He worked for the Southampton Town Highway Department as a foreman.
Committed to his community, he was a volunteer with the Southampton Fire Department as the head driver at the Hook and Ladder Company on Windmill Lane. He is remembered by his peers as a mentor and friend, providing training for all new members of the department.
Mr. Malone was also passionate about racing modified cars at Riverhead Raceway and Islip Speedway. He drove under #34 and was known as “The Flying Farmer.”
In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by two children, Linda Aldrich and husband Gary, and James Jr. and wife Lisa; three sisters, Patricia Barnathan, Sharon Raynor and Nora Brown and husband Robert; six grandchildren, Tamara LeGuen and husband Guillaume, Gary Aldrich and wife Denise, Matt Aldrich and wife Brandy, and Ashley, Brittney and Tyler Malone; six great-grandchildren, Ewen, Maeve, Oliver, Neeko, Mccoy and Callie; members of Mrs. Malone’s family, and many friends, nieces and nephews.
A funeral took place at the Basilica of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
