James Edward Flaherty, a longtime resident of Hampton Bays, died on February 25, 2020. He was 75.
Born July 23, 1944, in the Bronx to the late James and Swea Flaherty, he spent his childhood summers boating around the East End. After studying engineering at Clarkson University, he moved to Hampton Bays to become a commercial fisherman. He loved being on the water and made his living as a lobsterman for many years.
Mr. Flaherty fought bipolar disorder most of his adult life. In his last years, he found peace with his circumstances and redeemed his relationships with his children, survivors said.
He is survived by his three daughters, Shannon (Mark) Zucchero, Stacy (Chris) Rule, and Kelly (Doug) Einhorn; his wife, Marianne; his grandchildren, Marcus, Ireland, and Sheamus; his sister Linnea Levine and her two children, Chris and Melissa.
A memorial service took place at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Southampton on March 2.
