Southampton native James Gerald “Jerry” Herbert Jr. died April 2 in West Palm Beach, Florida, of natural causes. He was 73.

Born in Southampton in 1935 to J. Gerald Herbert Sr. and Eva Gilmartin Herbert, he overcame several childhood illnesses and later became a successful businessman. He returned to school later in life, obtained his master’s degree and worked as a college professor for a short time.

While he spent most of his life in Southampton, his heart was in West Palm Beach, Florida. He spent his last years living in downtown West Palm Beach, frequenting City Place, where he enjoyed the music and dancing.

Survivors said last week that he carried a zeal and passion for his strong beliefs, one of which was his faith.

He is survived by a daughter, Maura and her husband Michael Forman of East Quogue; two sons, James G. Herbert III of Oklahoma and Peter Herbert and his wife Anna of Cazenovia, New York; two sisters and their husbands, Ann and Albert Frankenbach and Kathleen and Arthur Hull, all of Southampton; a brother, Arthur “Pro” Herbert and his wife Sherry of South Carolina; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Eva Jane Nath.

Services were held on April 13 at St. Ann Catholic Church in West Palm Beach. A local memorial service will be announced in a future edition of The Press.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Ann Catholic Church Missions Account, St. Ann Catholic Church, 310 North Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33401 would be appreciated by the family.

But he agreed, because his story is so important — and can help so many others — because he needs a donor kidney. He’s not alone: There are some 100,000 people in the United States alone who need life-saving organ donations. It’s testament to modern ... 4 Jun 2025 by Editorial Board

Nearby are The National, which dates to 1911, and Shinnecock Hills, founded in 1891, the celebrity courses that every golfer knows and dreams of playing.
