James H. Storm of Hampton Bays died on August 16 at Southampton Hospital. He was 61.
A Southampton Village mail carrier for 25 of his 31 years working for the U.S. Postal Service, he was a friend to everyone he crossed paths with in the course of his daily rounds, survivors said.
A 1964 graduate of Our Lady of the Valley High School in Orange, New Jersey, he attended Jamestown College in North Dakota before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966. Wounded during his tour in Vietnam, he was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He joined the U.S. Postal Service in New Jersey during the late 1960s and was transferred when he moved to Southampton in 1981.
A lover of the outdoors, he was a supporter of several East End conservation and preservation groups as well as numerous charitable organizations of every kind.
Survivors said this week that Mr. Storm’s ever-present, friendly smile and generous and helpful nature endeared him to his family, friends and all on his postal route. He was dearly loved, they said, and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his father, Henry Storm of Southampton; two sisters, Geraldine Gillespie of New Jersey and Veronica Brown of Florida; a brother, Joseph Storm of New Jersey; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Visitation was held on August 20 at the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton, during which a prayer service was conducted. Cremation followed.
