James J. “Jim” McKenna of New York City and Quogue died on May 10. He was 88.

He was born and raised in Manhattan.

Working from an early age, he fondly recalled selling newspapers on the boardwalks of Rockaway Beach at age 8 or 9. This work ethic informed his entire life. When he had hip replacement later in life, he half jokingly claimed it was from pounding the pavement.

He met his wife, Renee, at Coopers Beach in Southampton. He had been a summer, and later full-time, resident of Quogue.

The years spent after marriage were the happiest of his life, his family said.

As a first generation Irish American, he wanted to be remembered as a member of The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick.

The McKenna family will remember him for his humor, caring and dedication to providing for his family. He will be remembered for his tenacity on the tennis courts of the Quogue Field Club and his enjoyment of sitting on his (front row!) bench at the Surf Club of Quogue.

In addition to his wife; he is survived by his daughter, Laura Mazzaro (Gene); sons Paul (Sarah), Douglas (Katie), David (Tracy); and nine grandchildren.

Two Steps Forward

There is a healthy debate surrounding The Express News Group’s annual list of “Water Hogs,” the somewhat inelegant moniker given to the South Fork’s biggest residential consumers of water. Is it an effort to shame the Suffolk County Water Authority’s “super users”? Or a reasonable effort to inform the authority’s other customers of the property owners who are doing far less to preserve water, especially at a moment when all 1.2 million customers are subject to a Stage 1 Water Alert calling for conservation? Either way, the focus should be on what needs to happen — and that is clearly ... by Editorial Board
