James Joseph Ward of Southampton died on August 27 surrounded by family at his home after a brief battle with cancer. He was 83.
Born January 9, 1927, he was a decorated World War II veteran who volunteered at age 15 and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He became prominent in the 1960s and 1970s as the president of Local 164 of the Hotel, Bartenders and Restaurant Employees Union.
Family members said he was a quiet, gentle, fun-loving man who had great positive impact on the many lives he touched.
He is survived by five children and their spouses, George and Candice Tietjen, James and Peggy Donovan Ward, Kevin and Teresa Ward, Peter Donohoe and Kerry Ward, and Timothy Ward and Sara Amani; 10 grandchildren, Alexandra and Bethany Tietjen, Caitlin Ward, Jesse, Samantha and Nicole Ward, Samuel Donohoe, Shiva, Zara and Ava Amani Ward; and a loving companion, Rose Staff. He was predeceased in 2000 by his wife of 48 years, Dorothea Ward.
A wake will be held on Thursday, September 2, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the family residence at 34 Lands End Lane, Southampton. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, September 3, at 11 a.m., at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church in Southampton.
In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 would be appreciated by the family.
