James M. Kane
James M. Kane of Southampton died at his home on Tuesday, January 17. He was 88.
Born on September 13, 1923 in Queens to Martin and Margaret Brennan Kane, Mr. Kane formed a passion for flying at a young age. When he first saw the seaplanes in Flushing, he told his father “I’m going to be a pilot one day.”
In 1945, Mr. Kane graduated as Naval aviator from the Naval Air Training Station in Pensacola, Florida and later met his wife, Irene, at Adelphi College. Based in Frankfurt, Germany, he was a pilot for Pan Am Airlines and he and Irene traveled the world together. Mr. Kane was also the first pilot to fly during the Berlin Airlift, family said.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; and children, Douglas Kane of Southold and Susan McAllister of Cutchogue.
A funeral Mass was held on Saturday, January 21, at St. Patrick’s Church in Southold. Father Peter Garry officiated. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Coster-Heppner Funeral Home of Cutchogue.
