James S. Marcus Dies July 5

James S. Marcus, a member of the Juilliard School’s Board of Trustees for 20 years, died on July 5, after a short illness. He was 85.

He was a retired Goldman, Sachs & Co. partner who had a childhood love of Wagner and went on to become chairman of the Metropolitan Opera. In 2010, the Juilliard School announced a $10 million donation to the school by Mr. Marcus and his wife, Ellen, and named its vocal arts program the Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts. He and Ellen Marcus were frequent underwriters of workshops and residencies by artists in the vocal arts field. Mr. Marcus also served as a trustee of Guild Hall of East Hampton. He was a founding member of the East Hampton Healthcare Foundation and PianoFest.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen.
