Jane Audrey Bossung of Westhampton died peacefully at home on February 7. She was 91.

Born on June 25, 1930, in Queens, she was the daughter of Gladys and Campbell Carmichel. Along with her sister, Joan, the Carmichel family lived in Lynbrook. After graduating from Lynbrook High School, she worked in the Empire State Building in Manhattan.

In 1953, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert F. Bossung. While her husband served as an Air Force reconnaissance pilot in the Korean War, Bossung and their first-born son stayed with family on Long Island. Upon his retirement from the military, the couple built a home in East Quogue where they raised their four children. In future years, they built homes in Remsenburg and in Westhampton. In the early 1970s, they established the family’s real estate business, Hampton Properties, in Westhampton Beach.

Bossung was an active member of Beach United Methodist Church for many years and served as a treasurer and later a trustee.

Their love of travel led the Bossungs on numerous vacations, including many memorable sailing trips around the United States and British Virgin Islands on their sailboat, The Ballerina. It was in St. Thomas, where they built a home where they would spend the winter months, always opening their door to family and friends.

Bossung loved to entertain and made every holiday a special occasion. Enjoying time at the beach, gardening and playing tennis were some of her favorite pastimes. She dedicated her life to her family. From cooking for a houseful to cheering on her children at their sporting events, her graceful, loving, warm personality was ever present, her family said. Her love of family expanded even more when each of her grandchildren arrived. She adored spending time with them and was a doting grandmother.

She was predeceased by her parents; her sister Joan Heiple-Seeholzer; sister-in-law Della Bossung; and her husband, Bob. She is survived by her two sons Thomas (Alexandra) of Remsenburg, Robert (Margaret) of East Quogue; and her two daughters, Paula Raynor of Westhampton Beach and Kathryn Stachnik (Michael) of Westhampton; seven grandchildren, Melissa (Eric) Raynor- Johnson, Megan (Mike) Iarocci and Kevin Raynor, Kristen and Dana Stachnik, Blane and Carly Bossung; two great-granddaughters, Makayla Iarocci and Hayden Johnson; her brothers-in-law Richard Bossung and Kenneth (Shawn) Bossung; and several nieces and nephews.

A private family service is scheduled at Beach United Methodist Church in Westhampton Beach. She will be interred at Calverton National Cemetery and a celebration of her life will be held at a future date.

Bossung’s family wished to extend a sincere thank you to the staff and nurses at East End Hospice for their care and compassion. “The entire hospice team was a true blessing to Jane and our family,” they said.

In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice (eeh.org) or the Beach United Methodist Church (PO Box 1746, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978) would be appreciated.

The Final Step

As Southampton Town considers aggressive action on sand mines, with plans to use amortization — a tool last used effectively to rid the town of nightclubs and bars the town considered nuisances — to finally end the practice, it’s important to cut through the rhetoric and state some facts. Sand mines serve a clear purpose and have economic value in a region where construction is a primary driver. But the town quite simply does not allow sand mining — that decision was made years ago, and what mines exist today are preexisting and nonconforming. Amortizing the properties is the last ... 11 Dec 2024 by Editorial Board
