Janice B. Gerton, a part time resident of Water Mill, died in her New York City residence on April 13. She was 95.
Mrs. Gerton, a graduate of Smith College, enjoyed a full career as an educator teaching French literature at the prestigious Bronx High School of Science. Throughout her long life she was an avid supporter of the arts through memberships, donations, and through her Arts and Letters Foundation which supported and will continue to support both institutions and individuals. Her particular passion was classical music, and she was a frequent attendee of operas, symphonies, and chamber events. Her second great passion was traveling, and Mrs. Gerton was a frequent visitor to Europe, especially her beloved France.
A lifetime New Yorker, her home in Water Mill was her “escape” from the busy schedule she maintained throughout her life.
Among the institutions that she supported were the New York Public Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Philharmonic, the Morgan Library, The Frick, the Parrish Art Museum, the Bridgehampton Chamber Society, and the Peggy Rockefeller Concerts at Rockefeller University.
Mrs. Gerton was predeceased by her husband of nearly 50 years, Milford D. Gerton. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. A memorial gathering will take place in Manhattan at a date to be announced.
