Jean P. Binnie
Jean P. Binnie died on May 17 at her home in Hampton Bays. She was 86.
Born on December 13, 1925, in Manhattan to Adele and William Binnie, she attended P.S. 193 and Hunter College High School. Ms. Binnie earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from Hunter College, graduating cum laude and being elected phi beta kappa. She later received her master’s degree in health education from Columbia University, and a second master’s degree in guidance and school counseling from Hunter College.
She taught at Hunter College High School for 34 years and loved her job, survivors said. She served as chairwoman of the school’s Department of Health and Physical Education.
After retiring from teaching in 1981, Ms. Binnie became a psychotherapist and opened the Hamptons Counseling Center in 1984. Ms. Binnie was an active member of the community during her time in Hampton Bays, serving as a trustee of the Hampton Bays Public Library from 1991 until 1999; she served as board president from 1996 until 1997. She joined the Literacy Volunteers of America as a language tutor in 1991.
Additionally, Ms. Binnie was a member of the Center for Creative Retirement and made many memories during her time there, survivors said. She often gave lectures to her fellow members and made many friends. She also enjoyed lunches and social activities at the Southampton Town Senior Center in Hampton Bays, and was always looking forward to seeing the friendly faces there, survivors said.
Ms. Binnie was predeceased by two brothers, Alexander and John.
She is survived by a niece, Ellen Kelly; and a nephew, William Binnie.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the R.J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays.
