Jessie E. Fanning

Jessie E. Fanning of Southampton died on Friday, February 1, at Southampton Hospital.

Born to Stephen and Eva Kellis, immigrants from Poland, she was one of the couple’s 12 children; two brothers survive her, Bob Kellis of Southampton and Eddie Kellis of Connecticut.

A graduate of Southampton High School, she married Joseph Fanning in 1946 and they had 48 years together, raising six children. She was a retired telephone operator and was a lifelong member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Ms. Fanning was very involved in the Southampton community when her children were young, and her home was the place where all of the neighborhood children would play, survivors said. She loved being around her family hosting many Fourth of July gatherings.

Ms. Fanning was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, in 1994. She is survived by her children, Joseph and Stephen of Southampton, Susan Matesic and husband Evans of Southampton, Nancy Munson and husband Frank of Virginia Beach, Patricia of Manorville and Mary Margaret Marcincuk and husband Robert of Southampton. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Ashley, Shaun, Michael, Joseph, Brandon, Daniel, Megan, Jackson and Haley; and one great-grandson, Jeffrey.

Services were held at the O’Connell Funeral Home on Monday, February 4, and a funeral service was held at Our Lady of Poland R.C. Church on Tuesday, February 5.

Memorial donations made be made to the Southampton Town Adult Day Center, 25 Ponquogue Avenue, P.O. Box 974, Hampton Bays, NY 11946.

Still Alive

Now come the shortest days, and we offset the long nights with lights and little candles everywhere. In a show of determination and defiance, decor is how we get through the darkest days merrily. I do not rationalize the need to decorate, and I do not fight the urge. Instead, I consider what is durable and plentiful. If I hang it from a bespoke wire hook, will people grasp the symmetry and austere beauty? Will they flock to my booth at the craft market? We had a bumper garlic crop. And sales were slack. So, going into soup season, we’ve ... by Marilee Foster

Simply Not True

I write in reference to an article published by 27east.com dated December 6 [“Southampton Village Ethics Board Finds Trustee Robin Brown Violated Code With Attendance at Fundraisers”], regarding a decision by the Southampton Village Ethics Board erroneously finding that I violated the village’s code of ethics by attending two fundraisers. I recently attended a Metropolitan Opera event at which a friend of mine was an honoree for her 90th birthday, and a fundraiser hosted by the Peconic Baykeeper. Although nothing about attending either event violates the ethics code, I found myself subject to an investigation by the village’s Ethics Board ... by Staff Writer
