The Season Of Concern

The temperature is falling as the first seeds are planted. The greenhouse has been off, water drained, no heat, and I haven’t had to think or worry about it because nothing depends upon its luxurious climate for most of the winter. The potting soil is lugged in; trays are filled and stacked, awaiting the seeding phase. I start the heater and turn on the water. Now the season of concern begins. The wind is blowing, and the plastic ceiling slaps and snaps. Nature’s wrath is a tad mocking. All that action is kept out, but barely, I know, by these ... by Marilee Foster

What Is The Price Of Social Isolation?

“It is a rare person who can cut himself off from mediate and immediate relations with others for long spaces of time without undergoing a deterioration in personality.” — Harry Stack Sullivan, 1892-1949 Harry Stack Sullivan, a psychoanalyst who practiced early in the last century, argued that only through the development of relationships with others do we grow, thrive and heal. His “Interpersonal Theory” has proven to be an important part of how we understand ourselves and the roots of anxiety and depression. Though much has been learned since Sullivan’s day, the simple truth of his work has stood the ... 22 Feb 2021 by Lisa Wolf, MSW, LCSW

No More ‘Steering’

At a public hearing of the county’s Fair Housing Task Force this month on what government has done — and likely will do — in the wake of the Newsday expose of widespread racial “steering” in real estate sales in Nassau and Suffolk counties, a state senator from Suffolk described his immediate action. “I asked, what is the law?” said Senator James Gaughran from Northport, who is an attorney. He said he was “shocked” to find that violating New York State’s Human Rights Law was “not a reason” for the state’s secretary of state to “revoke a salesperson’s or real ... by Karl Grossman

The Stevie Ray Vaughan Legacy

The memory is, unfortunately, etched in stone in my personal chronology: Crossing the Verrazano, August 1990, and from the radio comes the news that Stevie Ray Vaughan had been killed in a helicopter crash at the peak of his career. I had never been able to even look up the details. Until now. I came across “Texas Flood: The Inside Story of Stevie Ray Vaughan,” by Alan Paul and Andy Aledort, at a bookstore in East Hampton. Turns out that Aledort, a longtime music journalist and guitarist who’s played with the likes of Johnny Winter, is a Sea Cliff resident ... by Tim Motz

PRESS BOX: Some Vaccine Tips

By Joseph Shaw There’s only one way to beat COVID-19, and that’s mass vaccination. Unfortunately, the folks in charge of making that happen in New York State have created a system with all the simplicity, convenience and fairness of buying Bruce Springsteen tickets for the “Born in the USA” tour, circa 1985. Well, I got tickets for that show, at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh — front row, in fact, though off to the side, in front of the enormous bank of speakers needed at an arena show in those days. Lost my hearing for four days. Still, Bruce climbed ... by Joseph P. Shaw
