Joan Zimmer of Southampton died on August 22, 2018. She was 95.

Born in Far Rockaway in 1923 to Lillian and Irving Jonas, she spent her childhood in New York City, and at age 13, moved to Pennsylvania to attend Linden Hall, a private school for girls. She was a graduate of Katharine Gibbs School in New York City.

Mrs. Zimmer’s early career was spent in Manhattan from 1944 to 1965. She was a weekend resident of Southampton until 1965, when she settled there permanently. She was personnel coordinator in the Office of the Provost at Southampton College from 1965 to 1999, when she retired.

An avid reader, she also loved the beach and swimming, kayaking, entertaining her many friends, gardening with her husband, and needlepointing with her “Stitch ’n Bitch” friends. She volunteered for many years, most notably with the Southampton Historical Society and Southampton Hospital.

Mrs. Zimmer is predeceased by her husband, Richard; and her sister, Bernice.

A private memorial will be held in September.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.
