Joe D. Roberts of Winter Haven, Florida, formerly of Bridgehampton, died on December 30. He was 92.
Born in Monticello, Florida, on January 22, 1923, he was the son of the late Reverend Joe D. and Maggie Ellis Roberts. He attended school in Florida and later joined the U.S. Army until 1946, when he was honorably discharged as a TEC 5.
He was one of four children; a brother, James Roberts, and two sisters, Mickie Brown and Mae Eva Roberts Lane, all predeceased him.
Survivors said Mr. Roberts was a quiet soft-spoken man, who didn’t attend church regularly, but had a strong belief in God. He was a very generous, kindhearted and loving man who was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
He and his wife, who he lovingly called “Sally,” moved to Long Island where he was employed with South Shore Produce Company in Bridgehampton until his retirement. He spent his retirement years living in Fort Pierce, Florida, until he decided it was time to give up his independence and moved to Winter Haven, Florida, with his cousin Joyce Beales.
Mr. Roberts was predeceased by his wife Mattie Pearl Roberts; daughter Josephine Roberts; and son Charles Cherry.
He is survived by two sons, James Cherry and wife Pearl of Bridgehampton, and David Manning and wife Wanda of Winter Haven; and a daughter, Sandra Singleton and husband Dwight of Bridgehampton. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Amy Cherry of Florida; a goddaughter, Darlene Grant of Connecticut; a niece, Felecia Ford of Florida; nephew, Lewis Roberts of Georgia; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins and dear friends.
A funeral service was held last week at the First Baptist Church of Southampton, followed by burial with military honors at Calverton National Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
