John E. Gilligan Dies At 81

John E. Gilligan

John E. Gilligan of Hampton Bays and Vero Beach, Florida, died in Riverhead on Wednesday, December 21. He was 81.

Born April 20, 1930, in Queens, he served with the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard and was honorably discharged after the Korean War. He retired from the New York City Police Department after serving 25 years on the job. Mr. Gilligan was also the owner of Gilligan’s Saloon in Hampton Bays for many years.

Mr. Gilligan is survived by eight children, John J. Gilligan and his wife Judy of California, Janet Trafford of Riverhead, James M. Gilligan and his wife Karen of Northport, Margaret M. Brown and her husband Kevin of New Jersey, Daniel Gilligan and his wife Ana of Hampton 
Bays, Martin A. Gilligan of California, Matthew P. Gilligan of Florida and Kevin P. Gilligan and his wife Melissa of Florida; grandchildren, Patrick, Caitlin, Timothy, Nicholas and Amanda of California, Janessa of Riverhead, Brian and Catherine of Northport, Allison, Ryan and Erin of New Jersey, Robin of Hampton Bays, Miranda, Clay and Andrew of California, and Madeline and Katherine of Florida; and a sister Janet Mullen of Massapequa.

Family received friends at the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays on Monday, December 26. A funeral Mass was held at the Church of St. Rosalie in Hampton Bays on Tuesday, December 27. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
