John Francis O’Brien of Hampton Bays, and formerly of North Sea, died after a long illness on August 3, shortly after checking in at the Westhampton Care Center. He was 75.
Born on January 14, 1934, in Brooklyn to John J. and Josephine Butler O’Brien, he attended Brooklyn public schools and served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956. He moved to Southampton and married Anne Frances Bourke in 1956. The couple lived in North Sea where they raised their family until relocating to Hampton Bays a decade ago.
Mr. O’Brien had a long career in the construction industry. His father was a mason on local landmarks including Our Lady of Poland School (Our Lady of the Hamptons) and the Southampton firehouse on Hampton Road. In 1970, he formed John F. O’Brien Mason Contractor.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, Mr. O’Brien is survived by two sons, Michael O’Brien of Hampton Bays and Sean O’Brien and his wife Jule Ann of Southampton; two daughters, Anne O’Brien of Florida, and Josephine O’Brien of Hampton Bays; a daughter-in-law, Christa O’Brien of Montgomery; four sisters, Virginia DeLauro of Massapequa Park, Josephine Cassidy of Virginia, Florence Kissane of Hampton Bays and Maryalice O’Brien of Hampton Bays; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Brien O’Brien, and a sister, Rosemary Marcincuk.
Visitation was held on August 5 at the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton and a funeral mass will be held today, Thursday, August 6, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church in Southampton. Interment with full military honors will follow at the parish cemetery.
