John Gerald “Jack” Scarry Jr. of Westhampton died on March 22. He was 87.

Known as Jack, he was born in New York City to the late John Gerald Scarry Sr. and the late Catherine Scarry. He grew up on the East Side of Manhattan and attended high school at LaSalle Academy on a track scholarship. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 82nd Airborne division. Upon leaving the Army, he attended St. John’s University on the G.I. Bill.

After college, Scarry was accepted into the IBM sales training program. He had a long and successful career in computer sales management, continuing with Honeywell, GE, NCR Comten, and culminating with him running his own sales company.

He and his wife Linda raised their four children in Allendale, New Jersey, where he coached his kids’ sports teams, participated in local community affairs and was a devoted husband and father, his family said. As a native New Yorker, Scarry was a life-long fan of the New York Yankees, New York Jets and St. John’s basketball. The couple moved to Westhampton in 2002.

Scarry believed strongly in giving back to the communities where he lived and made sure to support LaSalle throughout his life, whether it be through computer donations, scholarship donations or his time. Besides his family and friends and the stock market, one of his greatest passions was making sure the young men who followed after him at LaSalle were able to continue with their education.

Scarry was married to his beloved wife, Linda, for 38 years until she died in 2010. He is survived by his children, daughters Elizabeth and son-in law, Chris Batenhorst, Jane and son-in law, Vin Petrucci, Sarah Scarry, his son John Scarry; his granddaughters, Maggie and Sarah Batenhorst; his sister Maureen Feltman; his brother Bill Scarry and sister-in-law Karen; his brother-in-law Steven King and wife Jo; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his sister Kathleen Geraghty and his nephew Michael Gaudette.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 3, at the Werner-Rothwell Funeral home in Westhampton Beach, from 2-6 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass on Monday, April 4, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Westhampton Beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to: LaSalle Academy, Scarry Family Scholarship, 215 East 6th Street, New York, NY 10003; or online at lasalleacademy.org/product/the-scarry-family-scholarship. Online flowers may be sent through wernerrothwell.com/obituary/John-Scarry/sympathy.

SOUTHAMPTON VILLAGE — Matthew Kopoulos, 34, of East Hampton was arrested by Village Police on December 2 and charged with petit larceny and unlawfully fleeing an officer, both misdemeanors, stemming from a September 25 incident in which police say Kopoulos stole items from the 7-Eleven on North Sea Road and then fled the scene on an e-bike. Love in Action

On behalf of the Hamptons United Methodist Church, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the generous donors and dedicated volunteers who made this year’s free community Thanksgiving dinner a remarkable success. Because of your kindness, we were able to serve nearly 500 of our neighbors — families, seniors, workers and individuals from all walks of life — by providing a holiday meal for their table. For the sixth year in a row, we are also deeply indebted to our fearless leader, Denise Smith-Meacham. A Day of Quiet

November 27, Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. Morning: I hear the screech owl, the great-horned owl, the Cooper’s hawk, Carolina wren, white-throated sparrow, chirps of the cardinal, red-breasted nuthatch, the cooo of the mourning dove; songs of rooster, flicker, dark-eyed junco. Titmouse, blue jay. Wind, barely a breeze, whispers haaaaaaaa in wind language, lovingly. Tranquility. Peace. I’m alive — ping of chill in the air, my skin zings. This sacred silence is why I moved here 40 years ago. But it’s completely gone now. And why? Was our designation of “green community” just a photo-op? A lie? Words co-opted like the phrase ... by Staff Writer
