John J. Michel of Southampton died on April 1 at his home, of cardiopulmonary arrest and complications of lung cancer. Known as “Jack,” he was 57.
Mr. Michel received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from American University in Washington, D.C., and worked as an interior decorator and designer in Washington, D.C. and New York City before moving to Southampton in 1994. In addition to his design work for Hildreth’s Department Store and Jack Michel Associates, he contributed a regular column, “My Gay View,” to The Independent newspaper in East Hampton.
Jack is survived by his mother, Hazel Michel, and a sister, Mary Ellen Michel, both of Maryland; and by many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 18, at 5 p.m. at O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton, with visitation from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
