John “Jack” Lattanzio of Southampton died on June 15, 2019, surrounded by family, after a brief illness. He was 77.

Mr. Lattanzio was born in Sag Harbor to Vincent “Jim” and Antoinette “Netta” Lattanzio. He attended Sag Harbor schools with his older brother, Jim Lattanzio, who predeceased him, and younger siblings, Chuck Lattanzio and Netta Livingston. After high school, he became a self-employed carpenter. In 1962, he married the former Judith Ward and they had four children, Cassandra (Jay) Butts, Michele (Kevin) Duchemin, Vincent (Libby) Lattanzio, of Sag Harbor and Vanessa (Steve) Petruccelli of East Hampton.

Mr. Lattanzio was also a father figure to George (Hollie) Pharaoh, as well as a grandfather to Robert Rozzi, Nicholas Borrelli, Zackery Borrelli, Kevin J. Duchemin, Samantha Duchemin, Sophie Lattanzio, Sadie Lattanzio, Anika Petruccelli and Carter Petruccelli; and great-grandfather to Cameron Rozzi.

He had worked as a dog handler and trainer, as well as at Grumman in Sag Harbor. He was a 22-year member of the Sag Harbor Fire Department (1967 to 1989) and enjoyed getting involved by helping out with community projects. One of his favorites was the Boy Scouts Pine Wood Derby. Along with being a talented woodworker, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. He was very knowledgeable about nature and all it had to offer and enjoyed sharing his experiences with all who came to visit. He was a great mentor and teacher for those who wanted to learn from him, survivors said.

In 1989, he and his wife moved to North Sea where he took a job as a gamekeeper on Cow Neck Farm. He managed daily chores and the farm’s duck and pheasant shoots, a job he loved, survivors said. After Cow Neck was sold, he continued his job down the road, at The Port of Missing Men (the Salm estate), where he worked until his death.

State lawmakers and Governor Kathy Hochul delivered for residents of the South Fork and Stony Brook University in the state budget formulated last week. As part of the massive spending plan, the governor agreed to a measure that would allow the state and the Town of Southampton to partner in an effort to restore the historic windmill at Stony Brook’s Southampton campus. Additionally, Hochul’s plan to create up to 15,000 affordable housing units on state-owned land across the state — including at the Southampton campus — was included in the budget. Southampton Village Board Unanimously Passes Code Updates on Side Yard Setbacks and Gross Floor Area Calculations, With Modifications

The Southampton Village Board unanimously approved several code changes at a work session on Tuesday night, April 23, related to dimensional regulations for residential yards, basement and cellar footprints, and calculations for the inclusion of additional structures, including garages, in a lot’s gross floor area. It had been the subject of controversy during a series of public hearings on the matter at the last board meeting on April 11. Investing in News

The 2025 New York State budget approved on Saturday includes elements of the Local Journalism Sustainability Act, providing a payroll tax credit for local news outlets — a lifeline for a vital but struggling industry that benefits every state resident. Over the past quarter century, traditional revenue sources for community newspapers have been greatly diminished as international conglomerates have largely gobbled up the advertising business and moved it online. Largely as a result of this shift, between 2004 and 2023, 2,627 weekly publications closed or merged with other papers between 2004 and 2023. Some papers that survived have become husks ... by Editorial Board
