John L. McMahon III of Sag Harbor died from complications from pneumonia on June 14, surrounded by family at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. He was 77.
He was born on February 20, 1948, in Southampton Village to Lawrence and Muriel McMahon. He graduated from Southampton High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from North Eastern University. He then spent 20 years as a Sag Harbor Village police officer. He was a master electrician and was an electrical inspector after retiring from the police department.
He was a 53-year member of the Sag Harbor Fire Department, Pheonix Company, serving as a captain.
He is survived by his wife Molly; his two sisters, Sheila and Pennie; 14 children, along with their spouses and significant others; 27 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Lawrence.
A celebration of life will be announced in July.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to an animal shelter of one’s choice.
