John MacWhinnie of Water Mill, a New York-based artist, died on October 11. He was 80.
He was a graduate of Southampton College, where he earned his degree magna cum laude.
He went on to build a distinguished career in the arts. His work was exhibited with Marlborough Gallery and featured in world-renowned institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
He loved nature and his animals. He also enjoyed writing poetry, and painting late into the night at his studio in Water Mill.
He is survived by his daughter Emma K. MacWhinnie; his son Johnny MacWhinnie; as well as his two brothers, Chuck MacWhinnie and Morgan MacWhinnie.
