John MacWhinnie of Water Mill, a New York-based artist, died on October 11. He was 80.

He was a graduate of Southampton College, where he earned his degree magna cum laude.

He went on to build a distinguished career in the arts. His work was exhibited with Marlborough Gallery and featured in world-renowned institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

He loved nature and his animals. He also enjoyed writing poetry, and painting late into the night at his studio in Water Mill.

He is survived by his daughter Emma K. MacWhinnie; his son Johnny MacWhinnie; as well as his two brothers, Chuck MacWhinnie and Morgan MacWhinnie.

Details regarding a memorial or celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Save the Village

I met with Mayor Bill Manger and the head of the Building Department, Chris Talbot. We agreed to explore a plan to help reduce the number of cars on our roads. Now, it’s a matter of following through on this concept. This plan would require any construction permit to have a transportation calculation. Job Well Done

Sundy Schermeyer first ran for Southampton Town clerk in 2006 and beat her opponent. I attended both “No Kings” rallies in June and again last Saturday. The spirit of both were identical: We are a community of Americans, coming together, expressing ourselves in the most American of ways — by demonstrating and marching.
