Lifelong Sag Harbor resident John Schiavoni died at his home on May 28. He was 78.

Born March 9, 1930, in Sag Harbor, he was the son of Concetta (née Lespina) and Angelo Schiavoni. After graduating from Pierson High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.

A member of the Sag Harbor Fire Department, American Association of Retired Persons of Sag Harbor, and American Legion Post 388, he was the proprietor and owner of Schiavoni’s IGA Market in Sag Harbor. He was a volunteer emergency medical technician and advanced EMT with the Sag Harbor Ambulance Corps and served on the finance committee at St. Andrew’s Church in Sag Harbor.

Mr. Schiavoni is survived by his wife, Doris (née Bruzdoski) of Sag Harbor; a son, Stephen Schiavoni of Southampton; two daughters, Alicia Farnam of Southampton and Karen Helfrich of Stony Brook; a brother, Joseph Schiavoni of Sag Harbor; two sisters, Leatrice Sherry of Sag Harbor and Florida and Constance Taylor of Florida; five grandchildren; and 11 nieces and nephews.

American Legion, Knights of Columbus and firematic services were held on May 29 at Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor. Funeral services were held on May 30 at St. Andrew’s Church; interment followed at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Cormaria Retreat, P.O. Box 1993, Sag Harbor, NY 11963, the Sag Harbor Fire Department, P.O. Box 209, Sag Harbor, NY 11963 or East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 would be appreciated by the family.
