José “ Joe” Montañez, formerly of Westhampton Beach, died peacefully on August 25, in Livermore, California, surrounded by his sons, Paul and Brian. He was 85.
Born in Corozal, Puerto Rico, on October 14, 1939, Montañez will be remembered for a life defined by service, resilience, and love for family that was constant and uncomplicated, his family said.
Throughout his life, Montañez wore many hats — farmworker, chef, police officer, volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and firefighter. He served with pride as an EMT for the Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance and as a firefighter with the Westhampton Beach Fire Department, always ready to help others in his community in their times of need.
In his later years, he found peace in Florida’s tropical warmth and the quiet rhythm of fishing — humble pleasures that reflected his appreciation for life’s quiet joys. However, his greatest pleasure came from being a father and spending time with his grandchildren.
“Grandpa Joe” will be remembered for his unwavering strength, his tireless dedication to every endeavor, and the steadfast perseverance that defined his life. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he cherished.
He was predeceased by his wife Anna Mae. He is survived by his sons Clarence, Paul and Brian; Brian’s wife Tara; and his grandchildren, Kara, Kieran and Ayla.
