Josef “Joe” Alfred Lemmen of Speonk died peacefully on July 13. He was 96.

Born in Speonk, he was the eldest of four children.

A lifelong musician, he studied voice and sang in choirs from childhood through his years at Cornell University, later performing widely, including at Lincoln Center under Daniel Barenboim and alongside soprano Eleanor Steber.

With the American Savoyards of New York City, he appeared in lead roles in numerous Gilbert and Sullivan operas.

During his U.S. Army service, he was featured on ABC’s “Soldier Parade.”

He went on to become a central figure in Long Island’s choral music, directing the Choral Society of the Moriches for more than three decades, to include annual presentations of Handel’s “Messiah,” as well as other performances of classical oratorios, operettas and choral productions.

His musical leadership and his voice resonated in churches, on stages and in the hearts of many across the eastern United States.

He operated Lemmen’s Nursery and Landscape and Seaside Irrigation of East Moriches, as well as Balsam Cove Campground in East Orland, Maine. He served as landscape contractor for Rock Hill Golf Club on Long Island.

He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Janet, in 2024. He is survived by his children, Gregory, Jane, Greta, and Robert; grandchildren Emily, Aimee, Jenna, Mitchell, Daniel, Michael, Katie, and Kira; great-grandchildren Anna, Quinn, Madeline, Graham, Eli, Miller, Ella Mae, and Ava; siblings Erick and Liz; and many friends.

A memorial service will be held at East Moriches United Methodist Church on September 12, at 11 a.m., followed by the joint burial of he and his wife’s ashes at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in East Moriches.

Memorial donations may be made to the East Moriches United Methodist Church Memorial Fund (eastmorichesumc.com).

In the Weeds

Late summer is reductive work. You harvest, take away the best, and plants, likewise, contract. The oldest growth — green leaves rimmed in death, tattered at their edge — cannot hide the fruit. A life cycle is complete … or, at least, nearing completion. Weeds, robust, and some 6 feet tall, tower over the remnants of the first melon planting. Their seeds are not mature, but the threat is burgeoning. One year at seed takes seven to weed. So the mower goes. We battle weeds all season, but in August, when the farmer is too busy reaping to spend time ... by Marilee Foster

Souvenirs

With less than a week to go before Labor Day, I panicked that I haven’t been to the ocean as often as I thought I would. I headed down to Ponquoque Beach to spend time with my son and granddaughters. At the end of August, in the parking lot, it’s not unusual to see broken beach chairs, single flip-flops or battered paperbacks with pages curling from the salt air — remnants of summer vacation. The beach buckets filled with sand, and maybe a hermit crab or a carefully curated shell collection, brought back memories. There’s a gentle melancholy in these ... by Denise Gray Meehan

‘Atomic Bill’

Live long enough and more interesting things happen. I received a script last year of a play in which, by name, I’m a character. The play is “Atomic Bill and the Payment Due.” Next week, it is to have its premiere staged reading as a featured presentation for the 50th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Peace Resource Center at Wilmington College in Ohio. It is by playwright and podcaster Libbe HaLevy, who spent 13 years writing it. She is already fielding requests for readings and presentations in Japan, New Mexico, Navajo Nation, Nevada and Germany, and has talks ... by Karl Grossman

'Fixing' Immigration

This letter is in response to “Fix the Problem” [Letters, August 28]: President Donald Trump campaigned on fixing “the immigration problem,” a serious issue that has persisted in our country for years under past administrations, both Republican and Democratic. So when a bipartisan-supported Immigration Border Security Bill was on the table in the Senate in early 2024, why did Trump interfere and have it blocked? A Senate bipartisan-supported Immigration Border Security Bill at our fingertips in 2024 would have been great for our country, but not so great for Trump. It would have challenged his presidential campaign. Trump didn’t want ... by Staff Writer

Keep Us Safe

Lifeguards should be at Ponquogue Beach on all four weekends after Labor Day. Ponquogue Beach is the biggest and busiest beach in the Hamptons. If people know lifeguards are on duty, they will flock there. It’s not safe to swim in the ocean unless lifeguards are present. The concession stand does not have to be open. We can bring baloney sandwiches and pink lemonade from home. Portable toilets are fine, and we can shower at home. James Dreeben Hampton Bays 1 Sep 2025 by Staff Writer

Speak Up

My wife, Lisa, and I have lived in Westhampton Beach for over 11 years. I am currently running for Southampton Town clerk in the upcoming November elections. I write today with deep concern about recent decisions from Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin — decisions that threaten the very environmental future of Long Island residents. Since being sworn in on January 29, 2025, Zeldin has launched an aggressive deregulatory agenda. He has proposed cutting the EPA budget by as much as 65 percent, far exceeding earlier proposals, and dismantled key research and enforcement functions within the agency. Scientific capacity has been slashed, ... by Staff Writer
