Joseph W. Babkiewich of Melbourne, Florida, and a former resident of Speonk, died on February 24 of complications due to a heart condition in the Holmes Regional Medical Center in Florida. He was 90.

Mr. Babkiewich was born in Speonk and graduated from Eastport High School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant during World War II and was wounded in action in Italy, spending many months in Army hospitals abroad.

It was in one of those hospitals that he met his future wife, Mary.

He and his brother Stanley Babkiewich operated a laundry and dry cleaning business in Delray Beach, Florida, for a number of years before owning and operating a men’s clothing store there.

He and his wife had resided in Melbourne Beach since 1995.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Elks Club. Friends and family recalled that he was an eager traveler and an enthusiastic golfer.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Eunice Babkiewich of Florida; a daughter, Mary Gale Baiz and her husband Marin of California; two brothers, Frank Babkiewich of Colorado and Edward Babkiewich of Florida and Remsenburg.

The family received visitors for a memorial service on March 7 in the Club House of the A1A Condo Park in Melbourne, Florida. Funeral services were held on March 8 at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Melbourne, Florida.
