Joseph Forrest Counihan of Southampton died on September 25 at Southampton Hospital. He was 89.
Born on May 25, 1924, he was the son of Alice Garlington and Michael Counihan and was raised n New London, Connecticut. He moved to Southampton 64 years ago after marrying Josephine Zucchero. Survivors said he devoted his life to making the lives of everyone who knew him richer. He was a tireless volunteer at the local food pantry, a ride to the doctor for anyone who needed one, and a kind visitor to the elderly in the local nursing home, those who knew him said. They added that he had a kind word for everyone.
Mr. Counihan is survived by his wife, Josephine; his children, Gregory, Nancy, Thomas, Richard and Mercedes; and his grandchildren, Nathan, Ava and Theresa. He also leaves his pets, Sage and Cody.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 2, at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the O’Connell Funeral Home.
