Joseph McDine Proctor, Formerly Of Southampton, Dies December 23

Joseph McDine Proctor of Riverhead, formerly of Southampton, died on December 23 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 80.

Born December 1, 1935, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, he was the son of Sadie and McKinley Proctor. He moved to Delaware where he worked as a migrant farm worker and later to Philadelphia, where he met and married Rosa Lee Latimore, who predeceased him. The couple had two children, Iris and Clara.

The family eventually moved to Bridgehampton and Mr. Proctor worked at Southampton Hospital as a custodian. While working there, he met Dorothy White and the two were companions for 41 years. They had a son together, Mohammed Proctor, known as “Man.”

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Proctor was predeceased by eight siblings. He is survived by his three children; a sister, Elaine Sylvester; two stepchildren, Darlene and Nazrus; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his companion, Dorothy White; and many relatives and friends.

A funeral took place at the Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverhead on December 29. Burial followed at Southampton Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.

The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF) is calling on the creativity of local young artists with the launch of its 2025 Holiday Card Contest. Open to all students in grades 6 through 12, the contest invites participants to design ARF’s official holiday card, spreading cheer while celebrating the animals waiting for adoption at the ARF Adoption Center.
