Josephine Counihan Of Southampton Dies December 2

Josephine Counihan of Southampton died on December 2. She was 86.

Born on January 28, 1927, in Southampton, she was the daughter of Paul Zucchero and Nancy Marino. Survivors will remember her as a woman devoted to enriching the lives of others. She had a passion for cooking, crocheting and antiquing, and finding a bargain at a yard sale was among her favorite activities.

Ms. Counihan was predeceased by her husband, Forrest Counihan, by only 69 days. She is survived by three children, Thomas, Richard and Mercedes Counihan; three grandchildren, Theresa, Ava and Nathan; and a nephew, Mark Zucchero.

A memorial Mass will be held on Monday, December 16, at 10:45 a.m. at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton.

The Southampton Town Board last week hurriedly adopted a change of zone affecting properties along Montauk Highway, or Main Street, bordering downtown Hampton Bays. The lawmakers said it was an effort to protect the hamlet from large commercial developments in the corridor. The move also effectively extinguished a proposal by Mottz Green Grocer to build a cannabis dispensary in the former North Fork Bank building next to the Carvel store in the corridor.
