Josephine Marie Salomone
Josephine Marie Salomone of Eastport died on June 4 at the Pegasus Palliative Care Center at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 88.
Ms. Salomone, known as “Marie,” was born on June 29, 1923, in Brooklyn to Eugene and Josephine (née Ball) Cleary and was the oldest of three children. She spent her formative years in Brooklyn, and graduated from Erasmus Hall High School. She continued her education at Sargent College at Boston University, graduating in 1944 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, and later earning a master’s degree from Adelphi University.
Following graduation, she moved to Eastport and began her teaching career at Southampton Public School and the Eastport Union Free School District. It was while in Eastport that she met the love of her life, Frank Salomone, an accountant and later a salesman in the duck industry. They married on July 20, 1946, and began a family of their own, raising six children. Ms. Salomone returned to teaching, ending her career at the East Moriches Union Free School District and retired in 1981.
In addition to her teaching career, she was a member, ranger, and club champion at the Rock Hill Country Club. She worshipped and served as a eucharistic minister at the St. John’s Roman Catholic Church in Center Moriches and volunteered in the food pantry. Ms. Salomone wintered in Marco Island in Florida, where she enjoyed swimming, boating, golfing and playing tennis.
She is survived by her brother, Arthur Cleary of North Carolina; four daughters, Diane Dinehart and her husband Jim of Connecticut, Janet Dolezel and her husband Dwight of Delhi, Marie Frederick and her husband Jim of East Moriches, Beth DiMilia and her husband Joe of Beacon; and a son, Robert Salomone and his wife Kathy of East Moriches, She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Frank, a son Barry and a brother Eugene.
Viewing will be held at Sinnickson’s Moriches Funeral Home in Center Moriches on Thursday, June 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church in Center Moriches on Friday, June 8, at 9:30 a.m.
