Julia L. Tunnell

Julia Louise Tunnell of Southampton died at Southampton Hospital on Tuesday, August 9. She was 90.

Ms. Tunnell was born in Southampton on October 31, 1920, to Arthur Tunnell and Louise W. Tunnell. Her family lived at the corner of Hill Street and Bishops Lane, and her father was self-employed and bought and sold real estate.

After college, Ms. Tunnel taught English and various subjects in the Eastport School District. Gregarious and possessing a big smile, she was loved by her students, family said. She maintained friendships with many of them throughout the years and enjoyed reminiscing with them.

She lived in Eastport during most of her teaching career and later purchased a home in Southampton Village. She had intricate knowledge of many of the local families of the East End and would strike up a conversation with anyone and usually quiz him or her to determine if she knew their parents or other members of their family.

Ms. Tunnell enjoyed long
walks in the woods with her dogs, most of which she rescued from an animal shelter. Her walks kept her outdoors until late afternoon or early evening, and her yard contained many trees she planted as saplings. In 2007, a severe illness ended her nature walks.

She is survived by her sister, Adelaide Tunnell of Florida and Maine.

Interment will take place at the Good Ground Cemetery in Hampton Bays.
