Kaianne Lily Farr Davis of Southampton died on June 21 i Durham, North Carolina. She was 4.

She was born in Southampton to Kara and Carl Davis on August 3, 2018.

Her parents had been hoping and praying for a little girl, they said, already having a house full of vigorous boys and they said almost everyone in their community knew it. What a wonderful blessing they received when she arrived, alert, inquisitive and with no tears, her family said.

Kaianne was full of spice from the start. She stole her father’s heart right then and there. She loved her family and being with her three older brothers, Nakai, Kaiden and Kairi. And they loved her back.

She also loved animals, music, which made her happy; and food, her favorite being pancakes. Even with all her health challenges, she continued to smile, her family said.

Kaianne was such a strong little girl. Just before Kaianne’s third birthday, after most treatments for her illness were exhausted in New York, her parents searching for additional options and hope moved to Spring Lake, North Carolina.

With her mom leading the way, her family said, with her fierce mother’s love, Kaianne courageously faced many adversities. After a long battle with brain cancer, she fought hard and won, her family said, and on Wednesday, June 21, Kaianne was called home to rest at Duke University Hospital.

She was predeceased by her great-grandfather, Lucion Bloxon Jr.; and her grandmother, Judy Davis.

She is survived by her parents, Kara and Carl (Frankie Jr.) Davis; her three brothers, Nakai, Kaiden, and Kairi Davis; her grandmother, Felicia Bloxon-Martin; her grandfather, Frankie Carl Davis; her great-grandmother, Essie Bloxon; three aunts, Nakia O’Bryant (Martin), Crystal Serrano (Davis) and Alexa Martin; two uncles, Derris O’Bryant and Aaron Serrano; and a host of great-aunts, great-uncles, cousins and friends.

Use Discretion

You don’t need to hear it from us, but: Times are tense. It’s a moment when, in our local communities, we need to be more careful to avoid knee-jerk reactions, and while vigilance is a virtue, don’t assume everything you see on social media is what it appears to be. At the same time, communication is going to be key. An incident last week demonstrated that all of us — including local police agencies — need to be aware of the unique moment, and take steps to make sure people are not frightened needlessly. A photo circulated last week that ... by Editorial Board

Do the Right Thing

When it comes to New York State’s mistreatment of the Montaukett Nation, it seems like Groundhog Day: A new year, but the same outcome, without fail. It’s insulting, it’s despicable — and it must end. This is the sixth time the State Legislature has put recognition of the Montaukett on the governor’s desk in Albany, with overwhelming, almost unanimous support. There is absolutely no ambiguity about the legislature’s support for the idea, and it’s been championed by local legislators for years. They’ve all done their jobs and deserve a note of thanks. Governor Kathy Hochul has vetoed the bill three ... by Editorial Board

We Mark Our Ballot: Westhampton Beach

Westhampton Beach The departure of Bryan Tymann from the Westhampton Beach Village Board leaves a large pair of boots to fill. After 10 years on the board, Tymann decided this year not to seek reelection for another term. He has declared that his mission was accomplished, noting that he fulfilled all the promises he made as a candidate when he ran for the first time a decade ago. And the proof has been in the pudding: Tymann, along with his constant running mate, Rob Rubio, as well as the other various members of the board, along with mayors Maria Moore ... by Editorial Board

Southampton Village Ballot

This year’s Southampton Village campaign has been active, with lots of information for voters to parse — and, unlike in some recent elections, the back-and-forth between the candidates has been respectful and restrained, even when the differences are significant and the criticism is pointed. This is testimony to the quality of all the candidates for both mayor and the two trustees seats, and it demonstrates that local elections can be hard-fought without being unseemly. In the race for mayor, Bill Manger is the choice — with a few provisos. At the recent debate sponsored by this newspaper, Manger and his ... by Editorial Board
