Kathleen Pike of Southampton died on February 27 at Stony Brook University Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer. She was 64.
Born in Queens, she eventually relocated to the East End, where she attended nursing school. She then married, raised two sons and went on to finish her nursing education. She worked as a nurse for several local doctors and also did private duty nursing. She also owned her own real estate business and helped many people to buy or rent their first homes.
Her compassion for her patients and clients stemmed from an instinct that set her apart, survivors recalled this week. She shared this compassion with friends, family and anyone with whom she came in contact, they said, adding that she will always be remembered for her generosity and the amazing energy that she had for life.
She enjoyed working in her yard, gardening, playing golf, traveling and spending time in her home on Hutchinson Island in Florida; but her favorite activity was spending time with her seven grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Yo-Yo.” She was an active member of the Lioness Club and Southampton Golf Club and did charity work for several organizations, including the Fresh Air Home and the Breast Health Coalition.
She is survived by two sons, Gary Pike and Lyle Pike of Southampton; longtime friend Eugene Romano of Southampton; a sister, Lillian McPhillips of New Jersey; a brother, Ronald Hallissey and his wife Candace of Washington; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Kayla, Garrett, Chad, Taylor, Zeus and Ariana Pike, all of Southampton; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Howard Hallissey, a sister-in-law, Geraldine Hallissey and a brother-in-law, Tom McPhillips.
A wake will be held today, Thursday, March 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 6, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Hearts Church in Southampton, with a reception to follow that is open to all.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the South Fork Breast Health Coalition, P.O. Box 1074, Southampton, NY 11969 or Dominican Sisters Family Health Service, P.O. Box 1028, Hampton Bays, NY 11946-0404 would be appreciated by the family.
