Kathryn Gilmartin Duggan died on Monday, March 16, at Southampton Hospital, surrounded by family. She was 73.
The daughter of David H. and Mary R. Gilmartin, she was born in Southampton on June 4, 1941. Ms. Duggan attended the Sacred Heart Academy in Sag Harbor, graduating in 1959, and studied sociology at Marymount College in Tarrytown. After graduating in 1963, she worked in the human resources department at NBC New York until 1967. She married William Duggan Jr. in August 1965.
A longtime parishioner at Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton, she was a trustee of the church for 15 years, a Eucharistic minister for more than 25 years and a religious education teacher for six years. She was a founding member of Friends of the Rogers Memorial Library, a docent at the Parrish Art Museum, and a volunteer for community health seminars and fundraising events at Southampton Hospital. She also was a member of the East End Hospice board for eight years and a member of the Southampton Study Club for 35 years. Recently, she was awarded the Gloria Gaines Memorial Award, the highest alumna honor, from Marymount College at Fordham University for exemplary service to one’s church, community, and the college.
Survivors said Ms. Duggan enjoyed spending time with her husband, her two children, and her twin grandchildren—lovingly known as “Chaos” and “Mayhem.” In her free time she loved to golf, cook, bake, read and travel the world. Survivors said she will be remembered for her faith, passion for life, sense of humor, grace, and especially for her devotion to friends and family.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Gilmartin Darby and Mary Gilmartin Steinbrecher. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, William H. Duggan Jr.; daughter, Ann G. Duggan; son, William H. Duggan III; daughter-in-law, Frances J. Orabona; and two grandchildren, Meredith and William; two brothers, David J. Gilmartin and wife Linda, and Martin R. Gilmartin and wife Pamela; a sister, Laura G. Masterson and husband William; and 24 nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton.
