Kim Michelle Davis Bagley of the Shinnecock Indian Reservation died at her home in Carollton, Virgina, on March 3. She was 52.

Ms. Bagley was born on June 23, 1963, in Southampton, one of four children of James Perry Davis Sr., who predeceased her, and Elizabeth “Libby” Davis. She was raised on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. She graduated from Southampton High School in 1981. During her high school years, she excelled in track and field. Her personal accomplishments included running the 100-meter dash with a personal best of 12.4 seconds, as well holding records in the 200-meter (26.1 seconds) and the long jump with a personal best of 17 feet. She was a consistent triple event winner. She held the record for the 200- and 100-meter events for several years. She was also a part of the Southampton girls varsity basketball team, which went to the New York State Regionals.

Ms. Bagley was a key member of the Shinnecock Squaws softball team.

After graduating high school in 1981, she joined the Army National Guard, following the footsteps of her father. She served honorably six years as a 71L (clerk typist). During this time she achieved the rank of SPC4/E-4.

On August 28, 1982, she married her best friend and high school sweetheart, Dennis Bagley. Traveling alongside her husband as he pursued his Air Force career, the couple had been stationed at Hill Air Force Base, Ogden, Utah. In 1983 they were reassigned to Bitburg AFB in Germany, where they spent three memorable years. During this time, they were both still active in sports. Many hours were spent traveling throughout Europe. In 1986, they were reassigned to Seymoure Johnson Air Force Base, Goldsboro, North Carolina. It was there that their first child was born, Shayla Denise Bagley. The year 1992 brought them back to Europe to Lakenheath AFB, England. It was there that Trevor was born. After spending five years in Europe they returned to Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. After her husband retired from active duty in the United States Air Force in 2002, after more that 21 years of honorable service, the couple settled in Carrollton. While her husband was serving in the military, Ms. Bagley maintained her role as a dedicated mother and wife while also working for the federal government as an accountant technician. During this time she achieved the grade of GS-12 at the U.S. Coast Guard Center in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Ms. Bagley furthered her education by taking online classes through the University of Maryland.

Survivors said Ms. Bagley enjoyed time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed laughing, cooking, baking and doing crafts. She was known for her delicious carrot cakes, which occasionally were shipped to family and friends. Her crafts still grace many people’s homes and offices.

Ms. Bagley is survived by her husband of 33 years, Dennis Bagley of Carrollton; daughter Shayla of Virginia; a son, Staff Sergeant Trevor Bagley based at Langley Air Force Base; her mother, Elizabeth Davis; a sister, Lenore Davis; and brothers, James Jr. and Darryl Davis, all of the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Celina Bagley; sister-in-law, Karen Overton and husband Ramon; and a brother-in-law, Michael Bagley, all of Riverhead; five nieces, seven nephews, many great-nieces and great-nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins; her godmother, Lillian Gardner; as well as a host of family and friends.

She was predeceased by her father-in-law, Junius “Hawk” Bagley; and a sister-in-law, Pamela Bagley.

A funeral took place on March 5 at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton; the Reverend Curtis Terry officiated. Interment with military honors followed at Shinnecock Cemetery.

The Bus Test

Social media was abuzz last week with a report: An unmarked bus was dropping off adult men in the parking lot of the Macy’s shopping plaza in Hampton Bays. Speculation was rampant, and it largely followed a national narrative about an “invasion” of immigrants ending up in American communities. In fact, there’s little information on what the bus (or buses — there likely were others) was doing. It might have been seasonal workers arriving for the season, but it could have been something innocuous, like a private bus trip returning home. Police were called, but as one town official pointed ... 1 May 2024 by Editorial Board

Terrible Optics

Westhampton Beach Village officials and Police Chief Steven McManus need a lesson in optics. The revelation last week that a body camera video recorded during the investigation of an off-duty Village Police officer who rolled his truck during a single-car accident in November 2021 was not released to the public for close to a year, despite numerous requests from The Press that went unanswered for seven months, sends the wrong signal about the village’s commitment to keeping the public informed. It was only after a request from an attorney on behalf of The Press that a copy of the video ... by Editorial Board

A Costly Hire

Permitting public employees to collect a six-figure pension while simultaneously collecting a six-figure salary is one of the reasons why New York is such a high-tax state. Though the Village of Southampton took it a step further: It wasn’t enough for the new village administrator to receive a $165,000 salary on top of a $120,000 New York Police Department pension — the Village Board just gave Administrator Anthony Carter a $50,000 pay bump, retroactive to when he started in November, in lieu of receiving village health insurance and other benefits.
